Framework
A handyman working with tools on a home repair.

You can fix almost anything. Own the company that gets the call.

Repeat homeowners, steady work, and a company with your name on the truck.

We're looking for experienced Bay Area handymen, maintenance techs, and home repair pros who want to go independent. We help the people we back get launched, find customers, and handle the business side.

No fee to apply. About 5 to 8 minutes.

Where we're starting

Built for the Bay Area. Five counties first.

Every business in the first cohort launches in one of five counties. That is where we know the market, the licensing, and the neighborhoods, and where we can show up in person.

  • Marin CountySan Rafael, Novato, Mill Valley
  • San Francisco CountyThe city, all neighborhoods
  • San Mateo CountyDaly City to Menlo Park
  • Alameda CountyOakland, Berkeley, Fremont, Hayward
  • Contra Costa CountyWalnut Creek, Concord, Richmond

Live outside these counties? Apply anyway and tell us where. We expand based on where strong candidates are.

Why ownership

Why owning this business is worth it.

Demand never runs out

Every home has a list. Homeowners and property managers want one reliable person they can call for all of it.

Repeat customers compound

A homeowner who trusts you calls you for the next ten jobs and tells the neighbors. That should build your company.

Room to grow

A handyman company grows by adding a second tech and taking on property management accounts. That is a real business, not just a job.

The honest part

What usually makes it hard

Most people who are excellent at this work never start a company. It is rarely the work that stops them. It is everything around it.

  • Staying under California's unlicensed work limit, or getting a contractor license to go above it
  • Quoting small jobs fast without losing money on them
  • Finding customers without paying a lead service for every call
  • Scheduling a day of six different jobs across the Bay
  • Invoicing, payments, and chasing the last check
  • Insurance and what happens when something goes wrong in someone's home
  • Hiring a second tech you'd trust with your customers

What Framework does for a handyman business

You bring the skill and reputation. We help build everything around it.

If selected, we build a launch plan with you. It includes:

  • Company setup
  • Licensing and compliance coordination
  • Insurance and bonding coordination
  • Brand and website
  • Customer acquisition
  • Phones and lead response
  • Scheduling and job tracking
  • Estimates, invoicing, and payments
  • Bookkeeping systems
  • Hiring and growth

The specifics depend on the business and on you. We work them out together, in writing, before anyone commits.

No fee to apply. About 5 to 8 minutes.

Who we look for

Who is a strong candidate

We care more about your ability and ambition than whether you've started a business before.

  • Significant hands-on home repair and maintenance experience
  • Broad skills across carpentry, drywall, fixtures, and small repairs
  • Reliable, tidy, and comfortable in customers' homes
  • Strong reputation with customers
  • Genuine desire to own a company

Licensing and eligibility

In California, unlicensed handyman work is limited to small jobs under the state threshold (currently $1,000 including labor and materials, with conditions), and no work that requires a building permit. Larger jobs require a contractor license from the Contractors State License Board, typically a B or B-2 license. Bonding and insurance apply. We can help coordinate the process, but you must meet all applicable requirements to operate.

Applicants must satisfy all applicable licensing, professional, and regulatory requirements for their field. Framework can help coordinate the process but does not grant, waive, or substitute for any license or credential.

We invest up to $25,000. We take 7%.
